What is the difference between balayage and foliage?

I have asked for balayage before and it barely showed up. Why?

How often will I need to come back?

A true balayage often only needs refreshing about twice a year. A more rooted foliage is usually every twelve to sixteen weeks. Both are far less upkeep than all over color.

Balayage is one of our most requested services at K Bella Hair Studio & Spa, but here is something most salons will not tell you. The word has come to mean almost everything. Instagram has blurred the lines so much that when someone asks for balayage, what they often really want is highlights, or a technique called foliage. A true balayage is freehand, hand painted, with very little lift. It is the soft, sun kissed look, barely there brightness that grows in like you spent the summer outside. It is beautiful, but it suits a narrow set of candidates, usually hair with little to no artificial color, because it lifts so gently.

The reality is that most people have some color in their hair already and want brightness they can actually see, so most of what we do is foliage. Foliage gives you the same soft, lived in, root focused look as a balayage, but it lifts through foils so the dimension shows up even on hair that has been colored before. For a lot of guests the right answer is a blend of the two, true balayage where the hair will take it and foliage where it needs a little help. Our colorists will look at your hair honestly and tell you which one gets you the photo you saved, instead of nodding along to a buzzword.

Whichever technique fits, the craft is the same. Placement is mapped to your face and your part, and the color is built around the health of your hair, then finished with bond building care so brightness never costs you condition. The payoff is dimension that grows out gracefully and still looks intentional months later.
